August 19th, 2016

The 2016 HRW wheat harvest is rapidly winding down as warm dry weather dominates in all areas remaining to be cut. The exception is North Dakota where even with significant rain over the past week they are now reporting 95% complete with harvest. Montana is now 99% complete with harvest and still reporting very good yields. Protein in the Montana crop has been highly variable with individual extremes ranging from well under 10% to over 13%. Regional averages across the state are ranging from just under 12% in the eastern areas of the state to above 11.5% in central areas to over 13% in southwestern parts of the state. Washington (87% complete), Oregon (97% complete) and Idaho (85% complete) had very favorable harvest conditions again this past week and continue to make significant progress with harvest continuing to be well above the 5-year average harvested acres for this date.

The first 30 HRW samples from the PNW (Washington, Oregon and Idaho via the Wheat Marketing Center) are averaging: TW 61.3 lb/bu (80.6 kg/hl), Protein 11.5%, TKW 33.7 g and a FN of 373 seconds. Yields in all 3 states are reported as very good with the exception of limited areas in the north that were affected by frost. Excellent quality is being reported in eastern and southern Idaho where 70% of their crop is grown. There is little change in this week’s overall averages as additional samples from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and North Dakota are in transit.

Early mill/dough/bake testing (TX/OK) indicates a 2-state average of 76.7% mill yield compared to 73.1% for the overall Gulf Tributary average in 2015. The 2-state average flour protein is 10.5% (14% mb) compared to the 5-year overall Gulf Tributary average of 11.7% (14% mb). Values have not been weighted for production.
