September 8th, 2017

This will be the final weekly 2017 US HRW Harvest Summary as harvest is now complete including all grade and non-grade testing on individual wheat samples.

There continue to be many similarities in kernel characteristics (grade and non-grade) between the 2016 HRW and 2017 HRW crops. The final overall Thousand Kernel Weight (TKW) average is 31.8 grams, just 0.1 gram under the overall average last year and significantly exceeding the 5-year average (29.4 grams) by almost 2.5 grams. The final Falling Number (FN) for 2017 is 367 seconds and is comparable to the 2016 average of 392 seconds. The similarities continue between the two crops with every other final grade and non-grade factor being equal to or averaging within two-tenths of one percent of one another when comparing year on year data. The only exception being moisture, which in 2017 averaged (10.6%), four-tenths of a percent less than in 2016 (11.0%). Milling has been completed, however, dough and bake testing continues.

A final summary of data will be issued mid to late September and will be divided into Gulf and Pacific Northwest Tributary States, will contain weighted data and an overall analysis of the crop including milling performance, dough functionality and baking test results.

Data presented in this report are simple averages of all individual samples tested and are not weighted for production.
