Hot and dry conditions continue to push the 2017 HRW wheat harvest to completion. All states currently harvesting made considerable progress this week with every state now at least 2/3 or more done. South Dakota is now 99% complete as is Wyoming. Montana is 95% complete with HRW wheat harvest and the Pacific Northwest states are now in the final stages and starting to wind down (Washington 72%, Oregon 85% and Idaho 67%).

No new samples were received in the lab this week and additional testing yielded no changes in grade or kernel data. The 424 samples now in the lab (of an expected 530) represent Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, Montana and portions of the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon and Idaho). There have been references in the domestic milling and baking industry as the similarities between this year’s crop as compared to last year. Initial data confirms many of those assessments, early mill testing of Gulf tributary states (Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado and portions of Nebraska) indicates very good flour yield of just under 79% (not a weighted average). This is significantly higher than the 5-year average of 75.2% and is comparable to last year’s Gulf Tributary average of 77%. Loaf volume (805cc) also compares to last year (819cc) and to the 5-year average of 844cc.

All data presented are simple averages of samples tested and are not weighted for production.
