The 2016 HRW harvest got back on track in almost all areas this week with only minor rain showers slowing harvest in northeast Colorado. Parts of Kansas also saw rain showers, but harvest is quickly winding down in most areas of that state. Western Nebraska is in the full swing of harvest and most elevators are reporting heavy volume as a result of very good yields. South Dakota is now 24% complete with harvest. HRW harvest in North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming has not started, but is expected to soon. Harvest in the Pacific Northwest is just now getting underway, but testing information is not yet available.
Testing data is currently available on 221 samples, with the exception of TKW and FN which are based on 195 samples. Test weight average is still very good this week, but has been reduced slightly by recent rains, 61.0 lb/bu (80.2 kg/hl) this week vs 61.1 lb/bu (80.4 kg/hl) last week. TKW also decreased slightly from 32.4 grams last week to 32.3 grams this week, but a marked improvement over last year’s final average of 29.8 grams. Falling number (393 seconds) continues to increase and while still slightly lower than last year (400 seconds), did improve over last week (384 seconds). Wheat protein did not change this week from 11.2% and continues to be the major topic of discussion of producers and within the trade.
Composites are currently being formed based on protein level (low, medium and high) for more extensive mill and bake testing. Milling is expected to begin next week on samples out of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.
