The HRW wheat harvest has moved into southeastern Colorado on a limited scale with test cutting in southeastern Nebraska expected within the next couple of days. Cutting progress in Kansas continues to be significantly slowed because of continued rain showers. Some wheat in extreme northwest Kansas and northeastern Colorado is still not completely ripe and is about a week behind in development. Harvest continues in northwest Texas (Panhandle), in far northwestern Oklahoma (Panhandle) and in the eastern areas of north central Oklahoma as weather has permitted.

Yields have increased slightly as harvest has moved northward into the eastern and the northern two-thirds of Kansas. Yields still range greatly, from 5 bu/ac to 50 bu/ac (.3 to 3.4 tons/ha), but the overall reported average within those areas is estimated to be over 30 bu/ac (2.0 tons/ha). Test weight has been reduced slightly due to continue rains in some areas of western and central Kansas, but is still above 60 lb/bu (78.9 kg/hl) in many of the more recently harvested fields not affected by drought and freeze.

The overall average test weight increased slightly this week from 59.3 lb/bu to 59.4 lb/bu (78.0 kg/hl to 78.2 kg/hl). These are welcome numbers considering the extreme and prolong rain events in the areas currently being harvested and sampled. Protein dropped slightly this week from 14.4% to 14.1% and is likely a reflection of harvest starting to move into somewhat less drought stressed areas. This is also implicated by the reduction in S&B dropping 0.2% this week to 1.3% and 0.3% below last year’s crop average of 1.6%. This trend is expected continue as harvest moves northward out of severely drought stressed and freeze damaged areas.
