June 6th, 2014

The 2014 HRW wheat harvest is now as far north as the Oklahoma/Kansas border in northwest Oklahoma. However, with the exception of two days, it has been sporadic at best over the last week as a result of isolated rain showers and high humidity in many areas. Drying conditions have not been ideal for harvest to get into full swing at any location over the past 7 days although temperatures were at, or close to, 100 degrees F (37.8 C). Cutting has also been slowed by a shortage of custom harvesters in most areas due to low production across Texas and Oklahoma.

Reported yields have generally ranged from 5 bu/ac to 25 bu/ac (.3 to 1.7 tons/ha) with the majority in the mid-teens (1.0 ton/ha). Most producers have focused on harvesting seed wheat first to insure they have enough to plant next year’s crop.

Early testing (26 samples from north Texas and southwest Oklahoma) indicates an average test weight of 59.1 lb/bu (77.8 kg/hl) and is encouraging considering the adverse conditions under which the crop currently being harvested developed. Generally, test weights have increased as harvest has moved northward. Testing also confirms the reports of very high protein out of that same area (14%). TKW testing has not been completed and will be of interest as those numbers become available. Another 14 samples were delivered to the lab Thursday afternoon and that data will be available early next week.
