The 2012 HRW wheat harvest is now focused on Montana and the Pacific Northwest. Montana is now 35% complete with cutting. Of that 35% complete statewide the southeast, east and northeast are 50% done with other areas ranging from not started to less than 30% completed. There are 20 bushel per acre to 25 bushel per acre yields being reported in the southeastern area to 40 bushel per acre and 50 bushel per acre yields being reported further north. Test weights are ranging from 57 lbs/bu to 62 lbs/bu and very good protein reports. Protein ranges in the southeast are from 14% to 16%, with most other areas reporting well above 12%. The exception has been the central part of the state where protein has been much more variable.

The PNW is now 31% complete with harvest overall. The majority of harvest has been in the southern half in each of the 3 states of Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Producers are reportedly pleased with the early yields which have been above average. Hot dry weather continues to aid harvest in most areas with producers receiving very little hail damage from the storms that moved through earlier.

Again, there was very little change in kernel data this week and with all Kansas grainshed testing complete the simple averages for dough functionality continued to improve with almost all parameters being well within the 5-year average.
