The 2011 HRW wheat harvest is quickly winding down in all states with the only area of significant acres yet to be cut being in Washington. While they are 85% complete, morning dew and cooler temperatures continue to slow progress. Proteins are still ranging from 9.5% to over 13.0%, with a PNW average of 10.5% so far as reported by the Wheat Marketing Center. As reported last week, a survey of handlers indicates HRW protein levels seem to be rising as harvest progresses with several reporting 11.5% to 12.0% plus protein. Test weights continue to be very good, averaging 62 lb/bu and higher with falling numbers in the 330 (sec) range. Yields continue to be exceptional and well above average for most growers.

In Montana, HRW wheat harvest is now virtually complete and spring wheat harvest in full swing. Average test weights are still being reported at 60 lb/bu. Early samples indicate protein is highly variable within defined geographical areas, but is still averaging in the 12% range.

The North Dakota HRW harvest is now 99% complete, with no new trends to report; disappointing yields, but high protein levels. Yields will likely average at or near 40 bu/acre, which is slightly below normal. This below average crop is attributed to a combination of too much heat, rain, leaf and bacterial diseases, etc. and a “mudding in” of the crop in some areas (sowing the seed in extremely wet soil conditions).

Grade and non-grade data will be available for North Dakota and Montana early next week and will be included in next week’s report.
